In mid-century New Orleans, Ignatius J. Reilly, a bloated, belligerent medievalist who lives with his mother, is forced to find work after a traffic-court disaster. He takes jobs in a degenerate clothing factory and as a hot-dog vendor, all the while filling Big Chief tablets with denunciations of modernity and schemes to reform the city. Around him move his long-suffering mother, the bartender of the Night of Joy, a hapless policeman, a downtrodden factory clerk, and a would-be political agitator. The novel is a comic picaresque whose collisions expose class, race, and sexual hypocrisy in one city's streets, bars, and workplaces.
