This narrative history of the English civil wars of the later fifteenth century runs from the weakness of Henry VI and the Yorkist claim through Towton, the reign of Edward IV, Warwick's rebellion, Tewkesbury, the usurpation of Richard III, Bosworth, and the last rising at Stoke. Seward follows noble households, queens, and captains as alliances shift between Lancaster and York. Battles and murders carry the story more than institutional analysis. The book is a dynastic campaign history, not a social history of fifteenth-century England and not a novel.
