This novel retells the Canudos war of the 1890s in the backlands of Bahia. The preacher Antonio Conselheiro gathers the poor, the devout, and the hunted into a holy town that refuses the new Brazilian Republic's taxes, census, and civil marriage. A Scottish anarchist, a nearsighted journalist, the Baron de Canabrava, and successive army columns close in on the settlement. Religion, rumour, and republican fear drive the campaigns. The book is a historical novel of millenarian revolt and siege, not a documentary monograph and not a biography of Conselheiro alone.
