Written in the 1570s and printed in 1627, this history recounts the Morisco revolt in the Alpujarras of Granada from 1568 to 1571. After Philip II's edicts against Arabic speech, dress, and custom, rebels under Aben Humeya fight a mountain war against royal captains; Don John of Austria later takes command. Hurtado de Mendoza, who served in the kingdom, describes raids, famine, massacre, and the final dispersal of the Moriscos through Castile. He is often critical of court policy. The book is a contemporary war narrative, not a romance of frontier knighthood.
