This anthology presents Old English poems with facing modern translations. Elegies such as The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and The Ruin speak of exile, the sea, and ruined halls. Heroic pieces include The Battle of Maldon, Brunanburh, Deor, and Widsith. There are also the Wife's Lament, the Husband's Message, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Dream of the Rood, and a run of Exeter Book riddles. The subjects are loss, loyalty, battle, and encoded objects. The book is a bilingual selection of surviving vernacular verse, not a prose history of the Anglo-Saxons.
