The Voyce of the World

Selected Writings of Sir Thomas Browne by Thomas Browne

By Thomas Browne · 2007

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This selection of Sir Thomas Browne's seventeenth-century prose gathers his principal meditations and inquiries. Religio Medici sets out a physician's Christian faith and its heresies and doubts. Hydriotaphia, or Urn Burial, starts from Roman urns found in Norfolk and turns to funeral custom and the vanity of earthly memorials. The Garden of Cyrus traces the quincunx through plants, art, and scripture. Shorter pieces and extracts from Pseudodoxia Epidemica examine received errors in nature and lore. The book is a miscellany of learned English prose, not a medical textbook and not a single treatise.
