The Voyage of the HMS Beagle
Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology Visited During the Voyage Round the World Under Captain Fitzroy
By Charles Darwin · 2003
Back to CatalogueFirst issued in 1839 as the naturalist's volume of the Beagle voyage, this journal follows Charles Darwin from 1831 to 1836 along the coasts of South America and on to the Galapagos, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. He records geology, fossils, coral reefs, and the plants and animals of each shore, together with gauchos, missionaries, and shipboard days under Captain FitzRoy. The Galapagos islands receive close notice of finches, tortoises, and variation. The book is a scientific travel narrative, not the later statement of natural selection in the Origin of Species.
