The Voyage of the HMS Beagle
Being Passages from the Narrative
By Captain Fitzroy, R.N. · 1977
Back to CatalogueThis narrative, drawn from Captain Robert FitzRoy's 1839 account of the Beagle's surveying voyage of 1831-36, together with his logs and letters, follows the ship's work along the coasts of South America, through the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego, and onward around the globe. FitzRoy records hydrography, weather, discipline, and the Fuegian passengers he had earlier brought to England. Extracts from Darwin and from junior officers add shore and mess-deck detail. The book is a commander's voyage record, not Darwin's later journal of natural history alone.
