The Voyage of Argo
The Voyage of Argo, the Argonautica
By Apollonius of Rhodes · 2014
Back to CatalogueThis third-century BC Greek epic follows Jason and the Argonauts as they sail from Iolcus to Colchis for the Golden Fleece. The crew includes Heracles, Orpheus, and other named heroes. Episodes treat the women of Lemnos, the loss of Hylas, the boxing king Amycus, Phineus and the Harpies, and the Clashing Rocks. In Colchis, Medea's aid lets Jason yoke the fire-breathing bulls and take the fleece; the return becomes a long, wandering flight. The poem is a learned quest epic, not a tragedy of Medea's later life in Greece.
