First published in 1902, this novel is set on a Wyoming cattle ranch in the late nineteenth century. An unnamed Eastern narrator watches the Virginian, a tall foreman, manage men, court the Vermont schoolteacher Molly Wood, and face the rustler Trampas. Episodes include a baby-swapping prank, a hanging of cattle thieves, and a delayed gunfight that the code of the range treats as necessary. Judge Henry's ranch and the town of Medicine Bow frame a story about work, courtship, and law on a closing frontier. It is a Western novel, not a biography of a historical cowboy.
