First published in 1901, this volume in the coloured fairy-book series collects wonder tales from Romania, Japan, Lithuania, Africa, Portugal, and other sources, retold in English for family reading. Typical pieces follow youngest children, enchanted animals, cruel stepmothers, and bargains with witches or otherworld helpers; some come from printed collections, some from travellers' versions. There is no frame narrator and no single hero. The language is uniform literary English rather than dialect transcript. The book is a miscellaneous anthology of traditional narrative, not an original novel.
