This volume collects letters Vincent van Gogh wrote from the 1870s to 1890, above all to his brother Theo, the Paris dealer who sent money and canvases. The correspondence follows him from the Netherlands and the Borinage through Paris, Arles, the hospital at Saint-Remy, and Auvers. He discusses drawing and colour, books, religion, poverty, and fellow painters, and often encloses sketches of work in hand. The sequence is a working life in first person, not a later biography and not a catalogue of pictures alone.
