First published in 1968, this history of the Viking Age runs from legendary northern origins to the death of Harald Hardrada in 1066. Jones treats the Scandinavian kingdoms at home, then the overseas movements: raids and settlements in the British Isles and Francia, trade and service in Russia and Byzantium, and the western voyages to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland. Sagas, runes, and archaeology are weighed together. A closing section covers Svein, Saint Olaf, and Cnut. The book is a narrative synthesis of Viking expansion, not a translation of a single saga.
