First published in 1870, this novel is set in the Wiltshire parish of Bulhampton, where Frank Fenwick is vicar. He defends Carry Brattle, a miller's daughter who returns after living as a 'castaway,' while her brother Sam is suspected in the murder of a farmer. The squire Harry Gilmore courts Mary Lowther, who prefers her soldier cousin Walter Marrable. A feud with the Marquis of Trowbridge and a Methodist chapel runs beside the marriage plot. The book is a parish novel of charity and reputation, not a sensation mystery of the murder alone.
