This anthology opens with John Polidori's 1819 tale of Lord Ruthven, a cold, seductive guest who preys on those drawn to him, then adds other nineteenth-century stories of ghosts, experiments, doomed brides, and hidden family crime. Typical settings are castles, inns, student lodgings, and country houses in Britain, Germany, and Ireland. Writers include Hoffmann, Irving, Scott, Mary Shelley, Hawthorne, Le Fanu, and Poe, among others; each piece is independent. The book is a period collection of macabre short fiction, not a single vampire novel and not a history of the gothic.
