Synopsis
First published in 1907, this comic children's novel follows the Chubb family after they inherit Finch Hall and leave a modest London suburb for a country estate. Mr Chubb and a houseful of children attempt fishing, shooting, visiting the poor, a flower show, a castle luncheon, and the management of servants, each outing sliding into farce. Neighbours and callers measure them against county manners they do not have. The satire is gentle and episodic. The book is a domestic comedy of sudden gentility, not a school story and not a mystery.
