This novel follows Cora, a young woman enslaved on a Georgia plantation, who flees with Caesar on a literal underground railroad of tunnels, stations, and trains. Each stop presents a different American regime: a South Carolina town of seeming uplift that hides medical and social control; a North Carolina of racial purge where she hides in an attic; later stages in Tennessee and on an Indiana farm. The slave catcher Ridgeway pursues her. Other runaways and station agents fill the road. The book is a historical novel that treats escape as geography and system, not a documentary history.
