The Two Gentlemen of Verona

The Two Gentlemen of Verona

By William Shakespeare · 1974

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This early comedy follows two Veronese friends whose loyalty collapses under desire. Valentine goes to the Milanese court and loves Silvia, the duke's daughter; Proteus, once pledged to Julia, is sent after him and immediately pursues Silvia instead. Julia follows in page's disguise. Valentine is banished and falls in with outlaws in the forest, while the servants Speed and Launce, with Launce's dog, supply a comic plot of errands and complaints. The play tests friendship against erotic inconstancy. It is a romantic comedy of disguise and exile, not a Roman history.
