First published in 1898, this novella is framed as a manuscript read at a country-house gathering. A young governess takes a post at Bly to care for Miles and Flora, two children under the distant authority of their uncle. She comes to believe that the dead servants Peter Quint and Miss Jessel haunt the grounds and want the children, and she presses the household, especially the housekeeper Mrs. Grose, to confirm what she sees. The narrative never settles whether the ghosts are real or the product of her fear. It is a ghost story of supervision and doubt, not a case study.
