This selection gathers several of Wodehouse's Blandings Castle comic novels rather than a single plot. The setting is the Shropshire house of the vague, pig-devoted Earl of Emsworth, whose prize sow, the Empress of Blandings, is a recurring cause of panic. Around him move his bossy sister Lady Constance, the efficient secretary Baxter, the butler Beach, rascally brothers and nephews, and impostors who arrive to further love affairs or steal the Empress. Plots turn on engagements, stolen manuscripts, and rival pigs. The volume is a cluster of country-house farces about the same household, not one continuous novel.
