This selection from Richard Hakluyt's Principal Navigations gathers English voyage narratives of the sixteenth century. Typical pieces follow traders and captains to Guinea and the Spanish Main, Chancellor toward Muscovy, Frobisher and Davis into Arctic waters, Drake around the world, and the first ventures to Virginia, together with reports of the Armada year and the last fight of the Revenge. The texts are contemporary accounts of routes, cargoes, fights, and captivity, lightly framed by Hakluyt's compiling. The book is an anthology of Tudor travel and sea report, not a continuous novel and not a modern naval history.
