First published in 1963, this memoir continues from the liberation of Auschwitz in January 1945. Levi and other survivors wait in Soviet transit camps in Poland, then are sent on a long, looping journey through Ukraine and Central Europe before reaching Italy in October. He records black markets, boredom, sudden kindness, and the talk of Russians, Italians, Greeks, and others sharing wagons and barracks. The tone mixes comedy of delay with the aftershock of the camp. The book is a first-person return narrative, not a history of the Eastern Front and not a sequel in fiction.
