Synopsis
This history reconstructs the proceedings that destroyed the Order of the Temple between 1307 and 1314. Barber sets out the Order's role in the crusader east and the West, then follows Philip IV's arrests in France, papal intervention, episcopal inquiries, the brothers' defense, and the suppression under Clement V. He examines the charges of heresy, blasphemy, and illicit rites, the use of torture, and how the trial ran differently outside France. The book is a documentary political history of a legal campaign, not a romance of knightly secret rites.
