This narrative history reconstructs the final Soviet assault on Nazi Germany and the fall of Berlin in the spring of 1945. Beevor follows Zhukov and Konev from the Vistula and Oder through the Seelow Heights into the city, and Hitler's household in the bunker as the command system collapses. German units, Hitler Youth, and civilians are caught between bombardment, street fighting, and the behaviour of the conquering armies. The book draws on Soviet, German, and civilian testimony to describe both operational decisions and the experience of the streets. It is a campaign history of one capital's last weeks, not a full history of the world war.
