Synopsis
Dictated in Fez in the 1350s to Ibn Juzayy, this travel narrative follows the Tangier-born jurist Ibn Battutah from his first hajj in 1325 through decades of movement across the Islamic world and beyond. He records courts, caravans, and holy sites in Egypt, Syria, Arabia, East Africa, Anatolia, the Delhi sultanate, the Maldives, and China, and later a journey to Mali. Rulers, scholars, and fellow travellers appear as he takes posts, marries, and moves on. The book is a first-person rihla of routes and patronage, not a systematic geography and not a novel.
