The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

By William Shakespeare · 1950

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

Written in the 1590s and printed in 1597, this tragedy is set in Verona, where the feud of Montague and Capulet frames the meeting of Romeo and Juliet at a feast. They marry in secret with Friar Laurence; a street quarrel kills Mercutio and Tybalt and banishes Romeo. Juliet faces a forced wedding to Paris. Comic servants and the nurse's talk sit beside the lovers' night scenes. The play is a city tragedy of haste and family hatred, not a political history of Italian states.
