Synopsis
Written around 1606-07, this Roman tragedy follows Mark Antony, one of Rome's triumvirs, as his alliance and passion with Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, collide with Octavius Caesar's rise after the death of Julius Caesar. Scenes move between Alexandria's court and the camps and sea-fights of the eastern Mediterranean, including the break after Actium. Enobarbus, Octavia, and the soothsayer comment on loyalty and decline. The play is a political love tragedy of two centres of power, not a documentary life of the historical pair.
