Synopsis
First published in 1872, this novella is told by the middle-aged Dmitry Sanin as he recalls a few weeks in Frankfurt in 1840. He defends a young Italian shopkeeper's son, falls in love with the sister Gemma, and is then drawn away by the wealthy married Maria Nikolaevna Polozov, whose will overpowers his engagement. The action moves among a confectioner's shop, a duel, and a country estate. The book is a story of memory and surrendered love, not a later American parody that shares the English title.
