First issued in the 1920s, this excavation narrative records the finding and clearing of the tomb of the Eighteenth-Dynasty king Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Carter describes the sealed doorway, the Antechamber packed with furniture and chariots, the burial chamber and shrines, and the long work of conservation and cataloguing with Arthur Mace and others under Lord Carnarvon's patronage. Season by season he notes objects, damage, and the labour of removal. The book is a field account of one tomb, not a general history of New Kingdom Egypt and not a novel of a curse.
