Synopsis
This volume pairs two late-Victorian scientific romances. In the first, a Victorian inventor travels to the year 802,701 and finds humanity split between the childlike Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks, then pushes further into a dying far future. In the second, Edward Prendick is marooned on a Pacific island where Doctor Moreau, a vivisector expelled from London, surgically remakes animals into humanlike Beast Folk and rules them by pain and a recited Law. Prendick watches the island's hierarchy strain as the creatures' animal natures reassert themselves and Moreau's experiment begins to fail.
