First published in 1895, this scientific romance sends an unnamed Victorian inventor into the far future, where humanity has split into the childlike Eloi of the upper gardens and the subterranean Morlocks who prey on them. He explores a decaying palace of green porcelain, loses his machine, and later glimpses a dying Earth under a swollen sun before returning to tell friends in a Richmond sitting-room. The book is a time-travel novella of class and entropy, not a technical treatise on machines.
