First published in 1952, this Albert Campion novel is set in a London still thick with postwar fog. A young widow, Meg Elginbrodde, is troubled by photographs that seem to show her dead husband alive; her new engagement to a kind, conventional man draws in Campion and the police. The threat is Jack Havoc, an escaped killer moving through alleys, a street band, and a hunt for buried wartime loot. Canon Avril and the smoke of the city shape the chase. The book is a crime novel of fog and pursuit, not a naturalist's study.
