First published in 1844, this historical novel follows the Gascon d'Artagnan to Paris, where he joins the king's musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together they serve Louis XIII while Cardinal Richelieu and the agent Milady de Winter work against them and against Queen Anne's secret correspondence with England. Duels, a journey to the Channel, and court intrigue fill the action. Inns, the Louvre, and the streets of the capital form the setting. The book is a romance of loyalty and conspiracy in the 1620s, not a documentary life of the historical musketeers.
