First published in 1858, this novel follows three young men in the London civil service: Harry Norman and Alaric Tudor at the Weights and Measures, and Charley Tudor at the Internal Navigation. Alaric's ambition, a City speculation, and a parliamentary inquiry threaten ruin; Charley drifts toward debt and cheap literature; Harry's steadier course is tested by love for Gertrude Woodward. Hampton, the office, and West End drawing-rooms form the setting. The book is a Victorian novel of work, money, and marriage, not a Barsetshire clerical chronicle.
