This volume pairs two thrillers. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first published in 1915, follows Richard Hannay, who flees London after a murdered agent leaves him with knowledge of a plot against Britain, and is hunted across the Scottish moors. The Power-House, first published in 1916, is narrated by the lawyer Edward Leithen, who stumbles on an international anarchist design run by a polished London intellect. Both stories turn on ordinary Englishmen pulled into conspiracy. The book is two separate adventure fictions, not a single continuous novel.
