Synopsis
First published in 1938, this history follows the war that opened in Bohemia in 1618 and spread through the German lands until the Peace of Westphalia. Wedgwood tracks Ferdinand II, Frederick of the Palatinate, Wallenstein, Gustavus Adolphus, Richelieu, and the later Swedish and French interventions, attending to plunder, disease, and the collapse of local order as well as to battles. The theatre is the Holy Roman Empire and its neighbors. The book is a narrative political and military history of one conflict, not a biography of a single commander.
