First published in 1967, this novel is narrated by an unnamed scholar of the crank philosopher de Selby who takes part in a murder for money in rural Ireland and then enters a strange parish of policemen obsessed with bicycles, atomic theory, and eternity. He meets Sergeant Pluck and Policeman MacCruiskeen, tours a station that opens onto infinite rooms, and seeks a black box of stolen cash. Footnotes on de Selby interrupt the story. The book is a comic metaphysical novel, not a police procedural.
