This medieval narrative, drawn from the anonymous thirteenth-century Itinerarium Peregrinorum et Gesta Regis Ricardi and related to the verse of Ambroise, follows Richard I of England from his voyage and the conquest of Cyprus to the siege of Acre, the march down the coast, the battle of Arsuf, and the failed push toward Jerusalem. Saladin, Philip Augustus, and the rival crusading princes appear as allies and obstacles. The voice is that of a participant-chronicler of camps, truces, and supply. The book is a campaign chronicle of one crusade, not a general history of all the Latin wars in the East.
