Synopsis
First published in 1962, this novel is narrated by Alex, a violent teenager in a near-future English city, in a slang that mixes Slavic roots with English. With his droogs he beats, robs, and rapes until he is caught. The state offers a shortened sentence if he accepts a conditioning treatment that makes him sick at cruelty and at the music he loves. The book follows what that cure does to his will and to the officials and victims who then use him. It is a dystopian novel about crime and free choice, not a psychology textbook.
