Written around 1611, this romance opens on a storm that wrecks a Neapolitan court party on an island ruled by Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, with his daughter Miranda. Prospero uses spirits, chiefly Ariel, to scatter the survivors: his usurping brother Antonio, King Alonso of Naples, the honest counsellor Gonzalo, and the king's son Ferdinand, who is set to court Miranda. The islander Caliban, who claims the land, plots with the drunk servants Stephano and Trinculo. The play is a drama of exile, magic, and restoration, not a history of Italian city-states.
