Synopsis
First printed in the 1623 Folio, this comedy opens with a framing induction in which a drunken tinker is made to think himself a lord and watch a play. In that play, Baptista of Padua will not let his mild daughter Bianca marry until a husband is found for her sharp-tongued sister Katherina. Petruchio of Verona undertakes to wed Katherina and tame her by hunger, sleeplessness, and public contradiction, while suitors scheme for Bianca. The play is a comedy of courtship and household power, not a tragedy of Italian city politics.
