This biography follows Benjamin Franklin from a Boston candle-maker's shop through his rise as a Philadelphia printer, civic organiser, and scientist of electricity, and on to his years as a colonial agent in London and a diplomat in France. Isaacson treats the almanacs and experiments, the Albany Plan and the break with Britain, the Declaration of Independence, the treaty work in Paris, and the Constitutional Convention. The book keeps the private man - marriages, friendships, illegitimate son, and self-invention through the Autobiography - beside the public career. It is a cradle-to-grave life of one founder, not a general history of the Revolution.
