Synopsis
This naval novel continues the partnership of Captain Jack Aubrey and the physician-naturalist Stephen Maturin after a Baltic mission. They carry a dangerous prisoner toward England, are wrecked and taken on the French coast, and face imprisonment, an intelligence tangle, and a delayed marriage. The action moves among North Sea waters, a Breton fortress, and the social claims waiting at home. The book is a historical sea novel of pursuit and captivity, not a medical textbook and not a standalone first adventure.
