Synopsis
First published in 1862 as The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson, this satirical novel follows three partners who open a haberdashery in London and try to grow it by advertising rather than by sound trade. Brown puts up the money, Jones supplies grand schemes, and Robinson, who narrates, records circulars, window displays, and the collapse of credit. The shop, the newspapers, and the partners' families are the setting. The book is a comic novel of Victorian retail puffery, not a Barsetshire clerical tale.
