This selection from Herodotus's fifth-century BCE Histories concentrates on the wars between the Persian empire and the Greek cities. The narrative follows Darius and Xerxes, the Ionian Revolt, Marathon, the crossing into Europe, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea, with Spartan, Athenian, and Persian commanders in view. Customs, oracles, and competing reports interrupt the campaign story, and the Greek cities appear as rivals as well as allies. The volume is an extract from a larger ethnographic and military enquiry, not a modern history of classical Greece and not the complete Histories.
