Synopsis
First published in 1929, this memoir follows the Swedish physician Axel Munthe from student years in Paris and medical practice in Rome and among the poor of Naples to the house he builds on a Capri hillside above Anacapri. He writes of patients, cholera, society clients, animals, and the ruins and villagers around the villa. Episodes shift among clinics, the island, and travel rather than forming one plot. The book is a loosely arranged medical and island memoir, not a novel and not an architectural monograph.
