First published in the 1850s, this autobiography recounts Aurore Dupin's childhood at Nohant, her convent years, her marriage, and the independent life she later led in Paris under the name George Sand. She describes her grandmother, her difficult mother, the breakdown of her marriage to Casimir Dudevant, and the households, friendships, and political commitments of her adult years, including the revolution of 1848. Country estate and city rooms share the setting. The book is a long first-person life narrative, not a novel of her heroines and not a treatise on women's rights.
