First published in 1931, this picture-story follows a young elephant who flees the forest after a hunter kills his mother, reaches a city, and is taken in by a wealthy woman who clothes and educates him. He returns to the jungle with motor-car manners and city clothes, is chosen king after the old ruler dies from eating a poisonous mushroom, and marries his cousin Celeste. The narrative covers their wedding journey and the start of a court that mixes elephant custom with human furniture. The book is a children's illustrated tale, not a natural-history account of elephants.
