Zachary Ezra Rawlins, a graduate student in Vermont, finds in his university library a mysterious untitled book that contains a scene from his own childhood. Following clues in the text, he enters an underground harbour of stories, a labyrinth of doors, bees, keys, and painted symbols, and meets people who serve, hunt, or try to close that place. Parallel tales of a drowned city and a painted lover braid with his search. The novel is a fantasy about readers and hidden libraries, not a campus realist story.
