This history portrays Joseph Stalin through the household and inner circle that ruled the Soviet Union from the late 1920s to 1953. Montefiore uses archives and memoirs to show dinners, dachas, and night work at the Kremlin, and to follow Nadya Alliluyeva, Molotov, Kaganovich, Voroshilov, Yezhov, Beria, and others as famine, the terror, the war, and the late purges remake the court. The method is scene and relationship rather than a purely institutional survey. It is a group biography of a dictatorship, not a military history of the Eastern Front alone.
